The Magicians by Lev Grossman Viking, 2009

I first read this book in October 2009, and I don’t have much to add to my original post about it, which is here. This summer, I heard that there was a sequel out, and promptly put a hold on the sequel at the library, but felt like I should re-read this first. I felt like didn’t remember a ton of detail from my first reading (though as I read, I kept getting surprised by what I did remember), and I wanted to reacquaint myself with the characters and their world. This time around I found the book pretty un-putdownable, which I think was true the first time too. Reading other people’s reviews on Goodreads, I’m still surprised by how many people find the protagonist, Quentin, totally unlikeable because he’s privileged but still unhappy. Other than that, I don’t have much to say, except that I’m excited to read the sequel, and also, I love that the good folks at Viking created this.

I hadn’t seen the Brakebills website before — that’s so great! It doesn’t totally make sense to have it, though, since Brakebills is a secret thing.

I am one of the people who didn’t like Quentin, but not because he’s unhappy in spite of being privileged. I don’t like him because he’s so obsessed with himself and he never stops being obsessed with himself (until the end of the second book, hooray!).

Yeah, I can understand not liking Quentin because he’s self-absorbed and can’t get out of his own damn way – I didn’t feel that way (mostly), but I could see how one might.

And ha, good point re: the website!

I’m reading the second book now, yay!
